Halting State_cover imageI’ve just finished reading Halting State by Charles Stross which I bought on a whim some time ago. I knew it would be good, it had a great cover (I always judge a book by it). The jacket ‘blurb’ also included praise from William Gibson so it couldn’t be anything but especially good!

It’s a thriller set in the near future and involves theft and murder in a virtual game world but the reason I mention it here is that there is more than a passing reference to Lovecraft. Pages 335-336 talk of the ‘mountains of madness’ in ‘Lovecraftland’ which is Stross’ gameworld in the story.

Well worth a read, I recommend it highly.

Chapter 4 added 13 November 2010.

In chapter 4, Harold and his new companion, Bernard visit Jeremiah Nule, the author of Mingsport – Ritual and Custom. This is a short and playful chapter with a couple of bits I really like

I love the boxes – 1 Upper Cut – get it?

I love the way Jeremiah gets angry at the ‘door knock’ scene. It seems to me that an academic, so wrapped up in his own world wouldn’t have time for interruptions and would have little patience

Jeremiah’s name was invented to obtain the  Leftcroft, Nule & Voyd name for the law firm. I use them all the time!

See you on the 13th December for Chapter 5.

Moo MiniCards

My Moo Cards (mini’s) came the other day. The quality is excellent, the service is excellent. Really impressive!

Moo allow you to produce custom ‘business’ cards, online. For business card think unlimited! You can create individual cards for any kind of promotion. They even do stickers.

I am using them to promote The Rising Tentacle. I can thoroughly recommend them.

I was working a little on Chapter 8 of Part II of The Rising Tentacle last night. It’s building nicely to the climax at the ‘Observatory Tower’ ,which sets up Part III. Part III is starting to coalesce in my mind and it will definitely be set in Egypt – there’s a bit of a plot, but not a lot. There are however lots of hooks and I can’t wait to get Harold and the gang out into ‘the land of sand’!

The Frontispiece to ‘A Fear of the Dark’ is developing well and I thought you may find this ‘handy’!

This'll come in handy!

Mu’s working on the Frontispiece illustration at the moment (what’s there at present is just a placeholder).

The Frontispiece to a book is a term that has fallen from favour in these days of electrickery. It was a ‘decorative illustration’ that appeared inside the book next to the title page (preceeding it). It was always on the left side or ‘verso’ as they used to call it (I love this stuff!) and was used in ‘scholarly’ books – perfect! [Thanks Wikipedia].

I’m including some frontispiece links found from a cursory glance aroud the internet but there must be millions more

Welcome to The Rising Tentacle – we’ve been expecting you!

The Rising Tentacle is a three-part story of unimaginable horror, with funny bits. It is being written as we speak. Praise has been heaped on it, even at this early stage in its genesis, rather like horse manure is heaped on roses (smells awful but eventually you get to see some pretty flowers…).

Read The Rising Tentacle here and see the story develop, with Part 1 – A Fear of the Dark.
