Chapter 4 sees Bernard, Victoria and Carlton travel out to England to meet up with Harold. They are anticipating a jolly holiday with lashings and lashing of (ginger) beer but they may well get more than they bargained for.

Harold is once again trying to put pen to paper, with little success. This lack of success is punctuated with a knock at the door, heralding the start of a new adventure. As the new adventure starts, he finds he is not about to “go it alone” as Bernard and the rest of the gang “come along for the ride”.

The Dedication and Preface to Transatlantic Terror, Part II of what is The Rising Tentacle are now published.
Transatlantic Terror starts two months after A Fear of the Dark and sees Harold, Bernard, Victoria and Carlton getting on with their lives after the traumatic events of what happened in the cavern under the hill, above the town of Mingsport. They each seem to have come to terms with the horror of that night. However, it will not be long before they become embroiled in the continuing terror of The Rising Tentacle.

The Epilogue is published – Fear the dark
Fear is the key concept in Lovecraft’s work, it’s what makes it, work! Unmentionable fear, paralysing fear, a fear that eats sanity. Coming up against unmentionable fear (I said don’t mention it!) leads to a loss of sanity.
The Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game uses this concept to good effect and as this first part of The Rising Tentacle comes to a close, our four characters have lost a little sanity. Because they are each strong characters they have managed to package away the unmentionable horror (there you go again!) into a small recess of their mind (does the mind have recesses, maybe it’s a convolution). As for the rest of the inhabitants of Mingsport, they remain clueless but they have learened to fear the dark and maybe, just maybe that is enough!

This is the final chapter of The Rising Tentacle – Part I – A Fear Of The Dark (although there is an Epilogue to follow next month). It builds to a climax, hopefully in both story line and humour and in a sense, it stops. This is good, it end, there’s a cut-off point but if it leaves you with a feeling that there must be more, then that’s good too. Because there is! It comes in The Rising Tentacle – Part II.
Now, if we come back to this chapter… Bernard’s gun makes the second of its appearances in the story, The Amulet raises its head and there’s a Gatekeeper. There has to be a Gatekeeper, ever since Ghostbusters introduced Zuul, it’s been law!
So, there you have it, Chapter 13. The Epilogue follows next month to ’round out’ what began in the mists of time. ‘But was it a mist, though?’
Just remember, if you get into difficulties – ‘Hold it erect! Hold it erect!’
