opening panel to Arzach imageJean Giraud – Moebius, the celebrated French comic artist passed away this year on 10th March 2012, aged 73. He created truly iconic work, such as Blueberry, Arzach (see image*), L’incal (The Incal), Le Garage Hermetique (The Airtight Garage), Silver Surfer (for Marvel Comics). He influenced all of pop culture; books, film anime. He will be greatly missed.

Whilst looking back over what little of Moebius’ work I own, I was once again staggered by the immensity of his work, its timelessness, its scope and its grandeur. One short story I came across links in with Lovecraft, of whom Moebius was ‘impressed’. It is to be found in Moebius 2. The Collected Fantasies of Jean Giraud. Arzach & Other Fantasy Stories** was Ktulu, a story including H.P. Lovecraft. The story was influenced by the report of a certain Giscard D’Estaing who went out to Africa hunting wild game using privilege of office (Moebius was shocked at this). The resultant comic is amazing, in true Moebius style.

If you can track it down, it is well worth the effort and cost (start with Wikipedia and work back to first principles…)

9781444723441 image via Amazon.co.ukIt’s not very often you get something for nothing these days but whilst perusing my the Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror section (is there any other?) of the Waterstones establishment, I came across a sign that read Free, take one, no catch! The sign was against a pile of Stephen King‘s The Gunslinger, book 1 of The Dark Tower series. This isn’t a book I’ve read although I do have a number of comics from the recent adaptation (also unread as yet). I took a copy and it was indeed free (several, from recent promotion which had been over-subscribed). Westerns aren’t a normal staple genre for me, although I am a fan of A Fist Full of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More & The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Bingo! Upon picking up said free book and reading the ‘special introduction’ written by King especially for this edition and then moving straight on to the ‘Foreward’ I realised the series was influenced by Tolkien‘s The Lord of the Rings and Sergio Leone‘s trilogy! I had to move straight on to reading Chapters 1, 2 and 3. Giving the 1st book in a series away free may be a ploy to get readers hooked but it’s a good one, I’m hooked! I will read this one and will move onto the following 7, as The Wind through the Keyhole is now published.

I cannot recommend this highly enough. It has a restrained, something which I know is only going to get much, much better. Best book I (n)ever bought!

Halting State_cover imageI’ve just finished reading Halting State by Charles Stross which I bought on a whim some time ago. I knew it would be good, it had a great cover (I always judge a book by it). The jacket ‘blurb’ also included praise from William Gibson so it couldn’t be anything but especially good!

It’s a thriller set in the near future and involves theft and murder in a virtual game world but the reason I mention it here is that there is more than a passing reference to Lovecraft. Pages 335-336 talk of the ‘mountains of madness’ in ‘Lovecraftland’ which is Stross’ gameworld in the story.

Well worth a read, I recommend it highly.

Hope's Truth imageBought a book yesterday from Stuart Olds called Hope’s Truth. He was signing in Waterstone’s in Bath. It’s billed as ‘Eco Sci Fi’ set in the past, present and future.

Stuart seemed a nice guy so I thought I’d give it a go.

He is based in Keynsham, outside Bristol. Book Systems + has a bit more info about the book, with good revews on Amazon. here’s a This is Bath write-up too.

It got me thinking, maybe one day I’d be sat in a Waterstones hoping someone would buy my book – Karma…

DMZ Page 01 image

This is my bed time reading at present. The author Brian Wood, with co-creator Riccardo Burchielli have created the best modern story of the moment. Ballard would have followed with interest, I’m sure. It’s a comic and it’s coming to the end of the story but it’s collected in the Trade Paperback Collections #’s 1 – 10 so far. The final story arc; The Five Nations of New York bring the whole wonderful story to an end.

Live From The DMZ – I urge you to read!

Just finished A Storm of Swords: Steel and Snow by George R. R. Martin. I’ve still got a long way to go before I get to read A Dance with Dragons which is now out though. I’m a slow reader. However, I’ve made a decision, I’m taking a Song of Ice and Fire holiday to read something different. It’s a difficult decision, the last few words of Steel and Snow linger at the back of my thoughts and when I least expect it, urge me to read the follow-on in Blood and Gold. And the book I’ll holiday with?

  • Morlock Night by K. W. Jeter, the man who coined the term Steampunk!

Steampunk has always been on the back burner but it’s piquing my interest at the moment.

I’ve also been reading some stuff by my new favourite comic writer; Brian Wood.

  • Northlanders Book 1 – Vikings done good!
  • DMZ Vol 1 – A journalist stranded in the middle of New York, in the middle of a civil war!

I finished George RR Martin’s A Clash of Kings and immediately started A Storm of Swords 1: Steel and Snow. I did think about starting a new book other than Martin’s, I have a pile sat waiting (Robert Jordan’s The Eye of the World, Raymond E Feist’s Rides A Dread Legion, Alan Campbell’s Scar Night) but I couldn’t not follow on.

  • I bought Snickt! #1 which is drawn and written by Tsutomu Nihei [  Wikia ]
  • Biomega #2 & #3 also by Tsutomu Nihei [  Anime News Network ]
  • Planetary #1 by Warren Ellis – writer and John Cassaday – artist [  timeline | Gallery | Sequart ]

Well, I finished George RR Martin‘s A Game of Thrones a little while back and it was amazing but I thought I’d have a change. Well, that lasted all of a week and a part of a chapter of a different book, before I was back onto Martin and A Clash of Kings! So compelling. I love the Black Watch in this second book. Can’t recommend it all hightly enough.

I am however, also reading a few other things. Namely

  • Tintin in America by Herge – I don’t think I’ve read this one in its entirety. Herge’s mastery of storytelling with images is evident at this early stage in Tintin’s genesis. [tintin.com]
  • The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service. Vol 1 by Eijii Otsuka. The premise for this manga of students at a Buddhist university gaining employment helping dead bodies attain the next level of reincarnation after gruesome murders is inspred. Art to die for by Housui Yamazaki. [Dark Horse]
  • Biomega #01 by Tsutomu Nihei. Sci Fi/Horror with a virus turning the inhabitants of planet earth into zombie-like creatures, motorbikes and a bear! Very little words, very cool imagery. [Anime News Network]
